Conflict puts children in the middle either way

The most useful finding in the research on children and divorce is this: the separation itself is not the whole story. How much conflict a child is caught in the middle of is strongly associated with how they fare — and that association shows up in households that stay together too.

That is not a reassurance that divorce does not matter. It does, measurably. But it reframes the question most parents are actually asking, which is usually some version of “have I damaged my child?” The more answerable question is: what can I influence from here?

Quite a lot, as it turns out.

Key Takeaways

Most children adjust over time. The American Academy of Pediatrics puts the typical adjustment period at two to three years, while a sense of loss can resurface for longer, especially around holidays and birthdays.

Being caught between parents is the mechanism that does the damage — and a 2026 meta-analysis found that link is stronger in mostly intact families than in post-divorce ones.

How children react depends heavily on their age, and the research shows the age at which a divorce happens changes the outcome.

Routine, not being used as a messenger, and the quality of parenting from each parent are the protective factors with real evidence behind them.

Ohio’s divorce rate has fallen by roughly half since 1990, to 2.4 per 1,000 residents (CDC/NCHS, 2023).

What the research actually shows

Two things are true at once, and most articles pick one.

The first: most children adjust. The AAP’s clinical report on divorce and separation states that most children do well over time, particularly those with supportive relationships and those who were well adjusted beforehand, and that most adjustment problems resolve within two to three years (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2016, reaffirmed 2022).

The second: the average effects are real. A 2025 analysis linking tax and Census records for more than five million American children found measurable differences in adult outcomes, with the largest effects when the divorce happened in early childhood — a divorce before age six was associated with about a 9% lower income at age 25 (US Census Bureau working paper, 2025).

Those findings sit together more comfortably than they look. Most children are fine; the averages still shift; and the things that move those averages are largely things parents have some control over.

One honest caveat about that large study, which its own authors state plainly: it compares families that formally divorced against families that did not, and cannot identify similarly unhappy families that stayed together. So it does not tell you what would have happened had you stayed. Anyone citing it as proof that staying together is better is misreading it.

The finding worth sitting with

A 2026 meta-analysis of 49 studies covering 23,336 people from 15,137 families examined how parental conflict relates to children feeling caught between their parents — carrying messages, hearing one parent criticised, feeling forced to pick a side. Feeling caught is associated with anxiety, depression, lower self-esteem and weaker relationships with both parents.

The headline association was substantial. The breakdown was the surprise.

The link between conflict and feeling caught was stronger in predominantly intact families than in families after divorce (Schrodt, Human Communication Research, 2026). These are correlations, and a stronger correlation in intact families does not by itself prove that separating helps — it may partly reflect differences in how much conflict each group has to begin with. What it does undercut is the assumption that the separation is the thing that puts a child in the middle. Conflict does that, married or not.

A separate meta-analysis of 115 samples covering 24,854 divorced families identified the pathway: parental hostility, support, structuring and role diffusion mediate the link between conflict and children’s problems, with negative parenting behaviours mattering more than positive ones (van Dijk et al., Clinical Psychology Review, 2020).

The van Dijk analysis is the stronger of the two for practical purposes, because it tests the pathway rather than a single association. Together they point the same way: the thing most worth protecting is not the marital status but the conflict your child is exposed to and the quality of parenting they get from each of you.

How children react, by age

The AAP groups reactions by developmental stage, and the differences are substantial enough that advice written for one age can be actively unhelpful at another.

Preschool, roughly 3 to 5

Children this age do not grasp that the separation is permanent, and will ask repeatedly for the absent parent. Expect demanding or defiant behaviour, sleeping and eating difficulties, and regression — a return to toileting accidents or baby talk after those stages had passed. They will also test the differences between each parent’s rules, which is developmentally normal rather than manipulative.

By four or five, children often begin to blame themselves, have nightmares, become more reluctant to separate, and fear being abandoned.

What helps most: concrete, repeated reassurance. Not one big conversation but the same simple messages many times — you did not cause this, both parents still love you, here is what happens next. A visible routine beats an explanation at this age.

Early elementary, roughly 6 to 8

Self-blame becomes more articulate, and fantasies about parents reuniting are common and can persist for a long time. Expect mood and behaviour swings — withdrawal one week, anger the next — and a possible decline in school performance. Children this age often feel abandoned by the parent who no longer lives in the home, regardless of how much contact there actually is.

What helps most: permission to have the feelings, including anger at you. Children this age frequently manage their parents’ emotions by hiding their own. Saying out loud that it is allowed to be sad or angry, and that neither parent will break, does real work.

A note on these two bands: the AAP groups 6 to 11 together as “school-aged.” Splitting them is a clinically useful distinction rather than one the AAP draws, and it is offered here as that.

Later elementary, roughly 9 to 11

Old enough to understand what is happening, not old enough to have much perspective on it. Anger is often more visible here, and may be aimed squarely at the parent seen as responsible. Loyalty conflicts become sharp, and children this age are acutely sensitive to being asked — even implicitly — to take sides.

What helps most: scrupulously staying out of the middle. No messages passed through them, no asking about the other parent’s household, no criticism within earshot. If you are seeing changes you cannot place, the age-by-age signs guide covers this band in more detail.

Adolescence, 12 to 18

Teenagers may understand the reasons and still refuse to accept them. Watch for two specific patterns the AAP names: taking on adult roles — becoming the household’s emotional caretaker or a parent’s confidant — and de-idealising one or both parents, while sometimes still believing they can engineer a reconciliation.

Difficulties at this age can show up as aggression, withdrawal, substance use, or falling school performance. The AAP also notes that moving away from a familiar environment is a negative factor; children who leave their former home tend to feel more distress.

What helps most: resisting the confidant role, however capable they seem and however much you need one. The AAP names taking on adult roles as a reaction worth watching for, not a sign of maturity to lean on.

What actually helps, across every age

These are the recommendations with evidence behind them, drawn from the AAP’s clinical guidance and the meta-analytic literature.

Keep routines as unchanged as you can. School, activities, contact with family and friends, discipline, chores. Predictability does more reassuring than words do.
Never put a child in the middle. No carrying messages, no questions about the other household, no criticism they can hear. This is the single best-evidenced item on the list.
Answer questions honestly, at their level. Honest and age-appropriate, not exhaustive. Children do not need the reasons; they need to know what happens to them.
Say explicitly that they did not cause it and cannot fix it. Especially under about nine, where the AAP identifies self-blame as a common reaction. Say it more than once.
Protect the relationship with both parents. The AAP is direct that the quality of parenting a child receives from each parent matters more than the custody arrangement.
Keep rules reasonably consistent across both homes. They need not be identical. They should not be opposites.
Look after your own functioning. A parent’s psychological state before and after the separation is among the factors shaping how the child does. Your own support is part of your child’s care, not a luxury.

And the thing worth knowing about the wider context: the economic and logistical disruption around a divorce is not incidental. In the Census analysis, household income, neighbourhood quality and distance from the non-resident parent together explained between a quarter and 60% of divorce’s measured effects on children. Stability in those areas, where you can manage it, is itself a protective factor.

Divorce in Ohio, in context

It may help a little to know how common this is, and how that has changed.

Ohio recorded 2.4 divorces per 1,000 residents in 2023, down from 4.7 in 1990 (CDC National Center for Health Statistics). Read that carefully: it is a rate per head of population, and it has fallen partly because fewer people marry in the first place, so it is not a clean measure of how likely a marriage is to end. The more relevant figure for a parent is that close to a third of American children still experience their parents’ divorce before adulthood. Your child’s classroom contains others going through a version of this.

When to involve a therapist

Most children do not need therapy to get through a divorce. Some do, and the useful distinction is between adjustment and something that is not resolving.

The AAP names four reactions as warranting intervention — they overlap closely with the broader signs that a child may need therapy:

Declining school performance
Behavioural difficulties
Social withdrawal
Physical complaints with no medical cause

The practical threshold, as the Canadian Paediatric Society frames it, is whether the behaviour continues or worsens. Expect an adjustment period. With younger children, that support often takes the form of play-based rather than conversational therapy. Watch the direction of travel. A child who is gradually steadying, even slowly, is usually adjusting. A child who was coping in month two and is struggling more in month six is telling you something.

Set that against the AAP’s two-to-three-year window and you have a reasonable rule: difficulty is expected, and sustained deterioration is not.

Does therapy help children of divorce?

Honestly: the evidence is better for some things than others, and worth stating plainly.

A meta-analysis of 30 studies covering 4,344 children found that preventive post-divorce interventions significantly improved children’s adjustment to the divorce and their self-esteem — but found no significant effect on broader mental health outcomes (Herrero et al., Family Process, 2023).

The strongest evidence in this field is for parenting-focused programmes rather than child-only therapy. The best-studied, Arizona State’s New Beginnings, works on the mother–child relationship and consistent discipline, with follow-ups at six and fifteen years showing better outcomes — and its own evaluators note the samples were overwhelmingly white divorced mothers, which limits how far the findings travel.

The AAP’s own position is appropriately hedged and worth quoting as the bottom line: professional counseling “may be necessary and has shown to be effective in helping children adjust to divorce and separation.”

So: therapy is a reasonable, evidence-supported step for a child who is struggling. It is not a guaranteed fix, and what you do at home probably matters more than what happens in the therapy room — which is itself a reason to choose a therapist who involves parents rather than one who does not.

Frequently asked questions

Should we tell the children together?

Where possible, yes — plan together what you will say, and say it together. It models the thing you most want them to believe: that the two of you can still cooperate about them.

How much should we explain?

Honestly, at their level, and less than you think. Children need to know what will happen to them — where they will sleep, which school, when they see each parent. They do not need the reasons, and adult reasons tend to become something they feel responsible for.

My child seems completely fine. Should I worry?

Not necessarily. Many children genuinely do cope. Keep a light eye on the quieter channels — sleep, appetite, friendships, school — because children who are managing their parents’ feelings often present as fine for a while.

What if my ex-partner won’t stop putting our child in the middle?

You cannot control the other household, and attempts to do so often become another front in the conflict. What you can do is make your own home a place where none of it happens: no questions about the other house, no criticism, no messages. The research suggests that is protective even when only one parent manages it.

Is it too late if the divorce was years ago?

No. Children revisit a separation as they get older and understand more, and a question that was settled at seven can reopen at thirteen with entirely new content. That is normal development, not a relapse.
